Heavy-Duty Mechanic

We have more than 10 openings available for Heavy-Duty Mechanics at a new rail services shop that is opening in Squamish this month.  This is an exciting opportunity to work on high-impact rail and rolling stock projects across North America.  The Heavy-Duty Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and troubleshooting of heavy rail equipment, including locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, and related mechanical systems.  This is an excellent opportunity for a wide range of candidates – from those with Red Seal and other certifications to less seasoned Heavy Duty Mechanics who want to expand their experience and training.

About the Role:

  • Full-time, Permanent in Squamish BC.
  • Schedule:  40 hours/week, Monday to Friday.
  • Starting Wage:  $37- $45/hr ; $48-$60/hr (Red Seal) based on experience *negotiable

The Perfect Candidate:

  • Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic, Railway Mechanic, or equivalent trade certification required.

  • 3–7 years of experience as a heavy-duty mechanic, preferably in rail, transportation, or industrial environments.

Responsibilities Include: 

Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul

  • Perform mechanical maintenance, inspections, repairs, and overhauls on rail vehicles and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical issues using schematics, manuals, and diagnostic tools.
  • Repair or replace components such as braking systems, running gear, couplers, suspension components, engines, and auxiliary systems.
  • Support refurbishment, modernization, and retrofit programs for rolling stock.
  • Support troubleshooting and corrective actions during commissioning, testing, and in- service operations.
  • Respond to equipment issues in the shop or in the field, including urgent or time-sensitive repairs.

Inspection & Compliance

  • Conduct inspections in accordance with applicable railway standards, maintenance manuals, and safety regulations.
  • Identify defects, wear, and non-conformities and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure all work complies with Transport Canada regulations, AAR standards, and internal safety procedures.
  • Complete required inspection and maintenance documentation accurately and on time.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and operations teams to resolve recurring issues.
  • Work closely with other mechanics, supervisors, engineers, and project teams.
  • Provide feedback on equipment condition, maintainability, and repair practices.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of maintenance processes and safety practices.

This role requires strong technical accounting expertise, structured thinking, leadership capability, and prior experience operating within well-organized financial environments.

  • CPA designation (Canada), active and in good standing.

  • Oversee full-cycle accounting and month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close.

This role supports refurbishment, repair, and new build programs for passenger and freight rolling stock.

  • Perform surface preparation activities including cleaning, degreasing, sanding, grinding, masking, and abrasive blasting as required.
  • Inspect surfaces for defects, corrosion, or damage and report issues prior to coating application.
  • Ensure surfaces meet required preparation standards before painting.
  • Apply industrial paints and coatings using spray equipment, rollers, and brushes as required.
  • Mix paints and coatings according to manufacturer specifications and project requirements.
  • Apply primers, intermediate coats, and topcoats to specified thickness and finish requirements.
  • Perform touch-ups and repairs to existing coatings as required.
  • Ensure coating work meets specified thickness, adhesion, and finish quality standards.

  • Ensures electrical systems operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with applicable railway standards and regulations.
  • Operates in a fast-paced, safety-critical rail environment where precision, responsiveness, and strict adherence to procedures are essential.
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair and build electrical systems on rail vehicles and related equipment.
  • Install, modify, and repair wiring, cabling, junction boxes, control panels, lighting, communication, and auxiliary electrical systems.
  • Perform fault diagnosis on low- and medium-voltage systems using schematics, test equipment, and diagnostic tools.
  • Support refurbishment, modernization, retrofit, and commissioning activities
  • Conduct electrical inspections and testing in accordance with maintenance manuals, standards, and safety regulations.
  • Verify system functionality, continuity, insulation resistance, and grounding.
  • Ensure all work complies with Transport Canada, AAR, and applicable electrical and railway standards.
  • Complete inspection, test, and maintenance documentation accurately and on time
  • Respond to electrical issues during manufacturing, testing, commissioning, and in-service operations.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and corrective actions for recurring electrical faults.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, engineering, and quality teams to resolve system-level issues.
  • Work closely with other electricians, mechanics, supervisors, engineers, and project teams.
  • Provide feedback on electrical system reliability, maintainability, and design improvements.

THE PERFECT CANDIDATE – Qualifications & Skills:

  • Completion of Grade 11 and over six (6) months up to and including one (1) year related driving experience.
  • Valid Class 2 BC Driver’s License with air endorsement.
  • Current First Aid Certificate or equivalent
  • Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials information Systems (WHMIS) and WorkSafe BC (WSBC) safety procedures.
