One of the most critical questions that you’ll get asked at EVERY interview is sometimes the  one that feels like the easiest to answer – but getting it wrong can cost you big so do not take it lightly.   When the interviewer asks you “Do you have any questions for me?” the worst possible answer you can give is a plain old “no”.   Recruiters expect you to ask some great questions so be ready.

This is your chance to impress your prospective employer!  Don’t miss it!

Asking intelligent questions shows that you have thoughtfully done your research, you are paying attention and you are very interested in the role.     When you prep for your interview, review the company website, social media channels and the job description and come up with some specific questions that you really do want to know about the company and the position – and not just about the money and benefits.

10 Great Questions

In addition to job or company specific questions, here are some other  great questions you could also ask:

  1. How long have you been working here and why do you like it here? This shows that you you value their opinion and gives them a chance to share their enthusiasm for the company with you.
  2. Why is this position vacant? or Who previously held this position? Did someone leave or were they promoted?  This can be a very insightful question, in particular if there seems to be high turnover.
  3. What does success look like in this role and how will it be measured?
  4. Can you tell me about the team that I would be working with?
  5. I like to be set up for success – what does your training program entail?
  6. What excites you about the future of this organization?
  7. What are some key short term and long term goals for this position?  department? company?  This allows you to engage them and ‘talk shop’ with you about the role and how you might be able to help them achieve their goals.
  8. What are some of the most difficult challenges that would face me in this position?
  9. Do you offer continuing education or professional training?
  10. What is the next step in this process?  According to Forbes.com, “This is the essential last question and one you should definitely ask. It shows that you’re interested in moving along in the process and invites the interviewer to tell you how many people are in the running for the position”

Remember, ask the that questions you are genuinely interested in learning about and that will help you decide if the position and the company are right for you.   And don’t ask too many!   Preparing up to five questions is a good idea but asking 2 or 3 questions are enough!
